Neuroimaging Changes in Menkes Disease, Part 1.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Menkes disease is a rare multisystem X-linked disorder of copper metabolism. Despite an early, severe, and progressive neurologic involvement, our knowledge of brain involvement remains unsatisfactory. The first part of this retrospective and review MR imaging study aims to define the frequency rate, timing, imaging features, and evolution of intracranial vascular and white matter changes. According to our analysis, striking but also poorly evolutive vascular abnormalities characterize the very early phases of disease. After the first months, myelination delay becomes evident, often in association with protean focal white matter lesions, some of which reveal an age-specific brain vulnerability. In later phases of the disease, concomitant progressive neurodegeneration might hinder the myelination progression. The currently enriched knowledge of neuroradiologic finding evolution provides valuable clues for early diagnosis, identifies possible MR imaging biomarkers of new treatment efficacy, and improves our comprehension of possible mechanisms of brain injury in Menkes disease.

This is the second part of a retrospective and review MR imaging study aiming to define the frequency rate, timing, imaging features, and evolution of gray matter changes in Menkes disease, a rare multisystem X-linked disorder of copper metabolism characterized by early, severe, and progressive neurologic involvement. According to our analysis, neurodegenerative changes and focal basal ganglia ...
متن کاملMenkes disease: case report of an uncommon presentation with white matter lesions.
Menkes disease is a rare X-linked disorder related to a defect in the copper metabolism. According to the current literature, the most frequent neuroimaging findings are cortical atrophy, chronic subdural effusion or hygroma, and vascular abnormalities. White matter lesions may be present before other features of the disease and may evolve into atrophy. We hereby report a case of Menkes disease...
متن کاملگزارش یک مورد نادر نشانگان منکس در ایران
We described the first case of Menkes syndrome in an Iranian infant in Tehran. He was admitted for control of seizure and assessment of developmental delay in Mofid' s Children Hospital in .January 1997. Clinical symptomatologies a/l favored the diagnosis of Menkes disease which was confirmed by low serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels.
متن کاملCerebral MR of Menkes kinky-hair disease.
Menkes kinky-hair disease (trichopoliodystrophy, steelyhair disease) is an X-linked neurodegenerative disorder that occurs predominantly in males. It was first described by Menkes in 1962 [1]. The characteristic clinical features are steely hair, profound retardation, spastic quadriparesis, seizures, and hypothermia. The disease is caused by an underlying defect of copper metabolism; and the se...
متن کاملDetection of Alzheimer\\\\\\\'s Disease using Multitracer Positron Emission Tomography Imaging
Alzheimer's disease is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and demonstration of amyloid plaques. Individual positron emission tomography tracers may reveal specific signs of pathology that is not readily apparent on inspection of another one. Combination of multitracer positron emission tomography imaging yields promising results. In this paper, 57 Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging ini...
